As a pioneering Venetian merchant, Marco Polo not only delved deeply into the Eastern markets and trade routes, promoting the exchange of material culture between the East and West, but also witnessed an unknown world on the Silk Road that connected Europe and Asia. His dictated work, "The Travels of Marco Polo" (also known as "Il Milione"), for the first time clearly presented the mysterious Eastern world to Europeans, bringing new knowledge in geography, society, customs, population, technology, and art. It propelled the arrival of the "Age of Discovery" and maintained significant international influence for 700 years after his death.
This exhibition brings together 135 precious exhibits from 15 Italian and Chinese cultural and museum institutions, covering a variety of categories including oil paintings, sculptures, manuscripts, ceramics, glass, jewelry, and textiles. Through the perspectives of missionaries, merchants, and warriors who traveled between Eurasia alongside Marco Polo, the exhibition recreates their thrilling adventures on the Silk Road, showcasing the interweaving of romantic legends and historical realities in the Eastern landscape. It reveals the fruitful outcomes of Sino-Italian cultural exchanges and the profound impact of this legendary journey on the contemporary world.
